The festival, which usually is celebrated for one week , iscelebrated inside the palace compound and it is rounded off with the grand finale on the last day of the celebration, which usually falls on a Saturday. Oranmiyan festival was first celebrated inOyo town in 2012 and has ever since become a yearly celebration which the people of Oyo lookforward to and hold in high esteem. The 2014 edition of the festival started Sunday September 7, 2014 and was concluded onSaturday September 13, 2014. The event was a very colourful one which wasgraced by the presence of first class kings, chieftains and other dignitaries from all walks of life. Not only were there many indigenous media of communication used during the celebration, therewere also many others that were evident in and around the celebration ground (Alaafin of Oyo’s palace compound)The grand finale of the festival, which is on the last day, sees the king, Alaafin of Oyo, incompany with some of his wives and subjects making a round of the festival ground three timesto display the bead crown Oranmiyan wore when he reigned as king in Oyo, the regalia he woreas king, as well as his staff. The bead crown is made with tiny red beads and is about 10 inchesin length, the regalia is made up of various clothes made with aso oke and the staff is made withmetal of about three feet. This is usually the high point of the celebration after which commencesthe reception of guests. An interview with Mrs Olayiwola, a television presenter with Orisun Television Station and anOsun adherent shed more light on the relevance of the festival. Olayiwola held that Christianityand Islam being foreign religions that we were either forced or cajoled to adopt as our and whichhas now made us to relegate the relevance of our own traditional values to the background whichis bad. Going further, she said that as Yorubas, we should always be proud of our values, cultureand traditions. She identified the Oranmiyan festival as one that should be celebrated by allYorubas regardless of the town or state we might hail from.
