AN APPRAISAL OF THE IMPACT OF WOMEN PARTICIPATION ON THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IN NIGERIA

Development has made it possible for women to participate in those activities which were exclusive reserve of the men. Our aim in this study is to examine the extent of women participation in politics in Nigeria which has been an exclusive activity of the men. The study restricts its findings only in Nigeria with a focus on the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council of the federal Republic of Nigeria between 1999-2007.A brief mention of women in the past that have participated in politics the world over was also made. Concerning the Nigerian women who participated in active politics between 1999-2007 in the Federal Executive Council and the Legislative Assembly, they were grouped based on the 3geo-political regions of the country with Middle-belt South-south joining the nearest region close to them. The activities of past regime in ensuring the full participation of women in politics was given coupled with the efforts of the regime under review.
