It is the ma!or reason for the formation of trade union which is formed to improve the working conditions of its members to work. The researcher also recommended that for impact of trade union on workers commitment to be effective, the trade union and those authorities responsible for the welfare of these workers should come together in reviewing those issues affecting workers commitment, such as life after retirement which is the most important issue considered by the workers.
CHAPTER ONE1.1 BACKGROUND/ INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY
This chapter opens up a discussion that undertakes the impact of trade union onworkers commitment, using a study of the NUT Enugu state chapter. Beforegoing further, the meaning of ‘trade union’ has to be known, which is defined asthe association of organisations wages and salary earners formed for the purpose of maintaining and improing the employment conditions of itsmembers in a firm or organisation. Therefore, this purpose, the trade unionimpact a lot of !ualities on the workers “employees# based on their efficiencyand commitment to work in an organisation. Thus, the workers gain improedworking conditions through the trade union actiities from the management of the organisation most especially when the employees are slow to action on thedemand of the workers “employees#Then, when these problems facing the workers are achieed thorough the tradeunion, it in turn motiates the workers “employees# to be more committed, focused and dedicated to their $obs due to the sense of belonging that has beenachieed by the trade union on behalf of the workers in the firm. %lso tradeunion has impact on workers commitment most especially on the area of competitors. Thus it is known that the trade union achiees its ob$ectiesthrough collectie bargaining. &f the purpose of the trade unions hae not beenachieed because they act as representaties to the workers and theconse!uences will result as strikes which is not good for the organisation inachieing its ob$ecties, the workers will be committed to work more efficientlyand help the organisation to sustain competitie adantage oer its competitorsunlike the strike carried out recently by NUT which was due to poor salary scheme policy by the federal goernment to the educational sector or ascompared to the other sectors. The result of this problem will be discomfort andnonchalant attitude to the teachers “workers# to do their $obs. &f it is not properlyhandled by the goernment and the conse!uence will bring a lot of disorder inthe education system. &n other words the trade union showed their impact on workers commitment totheir $obs in an organisation by going into dialogue with the federal goernmentin resoling the problem facing the NUT . Thus making them committed andefficient to the education sector of the country and to the society at large.
