1.0 Background to the Study

The study examines the ways in which cultural images, visuals, symbols, and archetypal models in Nigerian video-film can convey meanings. This is significant because images and symbols help the unconscious send quick messages to the conscious mind of man. As a result, signs and images influence how we perceive and comprehend films. The study holds that cultural factors are fundamental and important for viewing and interpreting films. The study concludes that there is a critical need to develop cultural viewing paradigms that can guarantee that we, as Nigerians, view our films in a way that gives them meaning for us, rather than viewing them through the lenses of Euro-Asian or Euro-American cultural paradigms, which would cause us to lose their meanings and essence.
